Answers:
You could do a some research on the blm and how they control the mustang population.
I saw some articles on the net about mustangs get sent to slaughter or are shot by ranchers or as jokes.
You could go into how to adopt a mustang or wild burro.
Or you could talk a bout the Nakota mustangs, the mustangs that are descendants of Sitting Bulls actual heard.
You could do a speech on natural horsemanship, what age is really ok to start a horse, west nile virus in horses.
I did a lot of competing through the FFA and I always tried to pick a topic that was current in the news.
Like Equine Herpes had hit at a farm in my area and a lot of people had no idea what it was.
So I wrote and did a speech on that.
I would check your local area for current horse happenings, wild fires and horses anything that is a big thing in your area.
That will usually get someones attention.
Good Luck!
i know exactly what you mean by finding something for 4-H I have trouble to but I'll give you some of my topics that I had success with.
1) I too did one on mustangs but instead of just talking about mustangs in general I would talk about one particular family like Cloud if you have ever heard of him. If you have read his story you could make up your own story about his struggles and triumphs in his life.
2) you could do your project on other breeds to like arabians and talk about how valuable the mare was for battle and make your speech like you were the horse or like if you were a descendant of a family member who owned the horse. you might want to do your homework on that a little bit though because their is soooo much on that subject. I did one of my projects on something like that and it is taking me to state this fall.
3)another one you could do is if you did one on famous horses and show in your speech how couragous and how much heart those horses had (you could talk of horses like Ruffian, Sea Biscuit, Secretariat, Man O' War, Barbaro, etc.) As you can see I like racehorses LOL but you can use any horses that are famous.
4) their is one project I did for school that could possibly do well and that is on midevel horses (especially if you talk about the knight's horse and what the horse had to do and wear and of how brave these horses had to be)
5)another breed one you could do is one on the Lipizzan and tell the story of how these horses were trained, their use in war and what they do today, etc.
6) you could also do anything on horses in history (such as Bucephalus and Alexander the Great) or even mythical horses such as Pegasus
these are just some of the ideas I have and I hope you do well on your project!! Good luck!
how about the difference in training styles, some trainers will hit the horse to teach it manners, and some do it gently with words and understanding the horse,I just had a horse trained by a horse whisperer, One month ago I couldnt get close to my mare, today i can give her a bath ,ride her ,pick up her feet etc. , And he didnt have to hit her once.
Sorrias vs 'mustangs'
That always starts an interesting debate with those folks :)
the number of wild horses left in 'the wild' and how it's decreasing
Or how about the fact that the "Mustangs" really aren't wild at all. Protect the wild horses of America?…..well they are not really “wild horses”….they were actually feral horses that had escaped the Spanish Explorers, the ranches, the Mexicans, the Calvary, and the Native American cultures that once freely roamed this land.
So these horses with the exception of a few bands (like the Steins Krieger’s (SP?), Clouds band etc) , were never isolated from the influx of new blood by horses that somehow got away to join the free roaming herds of horses.
I know for a fact that throughout history and even into the late 1970’s (and in some places this is still being done unknown to the public) the ranchers would routinely eliminate the herd stallions every other year and throw out a purebred stallion to breed with the so called Mustang mares. Every time this is done a different breed was chosen by the area ranchers in order to add to the gene pool. This was done for obvious reasons so the horses would stay strong and not get inbred to the point that they couldn’t chew food due to deformities that inbreeding causes.
I am sure that this area isn’t the only area where this was done. The Native American tribes also practiced this method of adding to the gene pool thus keeping the Mustangs strong. I also know that the Calvary regularly and routinely eliminated the old dominating stallion and replaced that stallion with another of different blood and breed.
My first horse came of the Klamath Indian Reservation and they ran a quite a few herds of “Mustangs”. They had a stallion of almost every breed out there with a little bands of "Mustang" mares and they would round up the weanlings and sell them and one of these was my first horse. She had a wavy mane %26 tail like a Morgan horse, she got more and more snowflake spots every year showing the Appaloosa in her, and she was a little bit gaited…..this may have come from the Morgan or the Appy either one.
So if you really want to get people riled up pointing out some truths will certainly do that.
Or you could talk about the slaughter issues and the problems that are happening as a result of the HB that in effect closed the last remaining slaughter houses down.
Don’t get me wrong I am not for the undisciplined slaughter of horses. It is the breeders and owners that need to discipline themselves to better the market.
But people have got to recognize that it is the slaughter market that regulates the prices on the open market. And with that market being virtually gone….well let’s just say the price of horses has dropped a HUGE amount this past year or so.
Can you imagine what would happen to the beef, pork, chicken %26 turkey industries if some special interest group like PETA decides that these animals are pets too? The prices of these animals would fall as well. The slaughter markets regulate prices from the producers to the consumers be it beef, pork, chickens, turkeys, or horses or wheat.
I could have bought 20 head of horses this past week for an average price of $15.00ea at the sale last Wednesday. Some were $2.50…. Now these are not crippled or broken down horses and most had what it seemed to be decent brains and most all except for the $2.50 horse (yearling) were good trail %26 ranch horses. Instead of being responsible for their horses people are dumping them in the sale yards and a great deal of the untraceable ones being dumped on public lands.
Then the BLM rounds them up, advertises for the owners to come and claim there “escaped” horses pay the round up fee for them and 2 weeks board etc….to which the owner or owners never respond and the horses then get sold at the sale yard.
All of this dumping of horses on public lands is a direct result of the latest HB that was passed to shut down the last legal slaughter houses because some people campaigned to have them shut down because of the inhumanness of it all.
My only question is to the people who pushed for the HB are they willing to take care of (on their own places) and fork out the money to feed all of these horses that the owners can no longer take care of or that are unwanted, crippled, or dangerous to the public? Probably not.
Maybe Bo Derek's ranch address should have been included in the HB so that she could have taken care of all of the unwanteds herself. But she had nothing to lose by supplying the money behind the campaign to push this bill. Oh but we saved "Cloud and his band of." well there were already laws in place that were protecting "Cloud and his band of mares" and other bands like his.
Did you know that the BLM is advertising for people with large acreages to set up protected sanctuaries for these bands of horses? They are doing this because the lands that they are now on are not sustaining the health of the horses. And BLM is willing to pay for their keep, care and board! They are actually advertising for people to be able to take care of up to 1000 head of feral horses in one location. Makes me wish I had a huge ranch to take care of a large number of horses and manage them as "wild" but BLM wants them wormed, vaccinated, and sell off or separate the new crops from the old with minimal contact so the horses can remain wild.
