I have two geldings, one is 11, the other is 6. The older gelding picks on the younger one terribly. He has?

caused terrible sores on the younger geldings back. I have seperated them, but wonder why they can't get along?

Its a pecking order, that is the only reason. The older one has established his dominance and is being ascertive with the younger one to let him know. If you put a younger horse in with your 6 year old, the 6 year old would be alpha and he would do the same thing, maybe not as badly but he would do it. We had 6 horses, 4 adults and two babies and my horse who was second oldest was at the bottom of the totum pole so he got bit from everybody, including the babies. We are now down to two horses and my horse who was once at the bottom is now king sh*t and bites the crap out of my three year old when he can.
i would ask a vet about it.
This is what horses do. It's like running a kindergarten. One asserts dominance over the other.
may be the older one just doesnt like the fact that he has a younger sib. or have you been paying too much attention to the little one and forgot about the big one.
Have they always been put out together? We have horses, and there is one that is the dominant one out in the field, if we put one out that hasn't been out in awhile she will attack them and not even let them eat the hay we put out. It is all a territory thing and they should get over it eventually. It just takes them some time. This last one we put out stayed away from the rest because she was so mean, but after like two weeks it was ok. Sometimes it happens that they get over it faster than others, and sometimes they just always want to prove that they are the boss. Good Luck and just give it a little time or always keep them seperate!
make sure you have them on over 4 acres.
Are there any mares around at all?!?
Can the younger guy get away and get some solace or is it constant running and biting? How long do you leave them together before removing the younger?
If there are mares around you may never be able to put them together. Not because one is proud but some geldings are more aggressive than others.
If you are taking the younger horse away before he has a chance to fight back it may never solve the problem. However if you have left them alone for a day (12 + hrs) and it still persists, leave them separated for good.
Bummer that you have this problem.
Good luck
Some horses just don't do well together, just like some people don't do well together. Next time you buy another horse, introduce it to your own horses before you buy it.
It is like our horse that we bought it got bullied then they sold the other and so nothe on that got beat up beats up all the other horses.
That is very strange.. My horse gets along with my brother's and my sister's horse. Well, I do admit they know eachother for a long time so that's why they didn't pick on eacother!
Some are just like that. Some mares are the same way. I would separate them, but try to get the young one with a better tempered horse if you can, so he doesn't turn out the same way. Good Luck.
What he is doing is establishing the "pecking order". This is the order they have in the wild to show whose boss. You should always be first. The horses decide the rest. If they're not establishing the pecking order, then maybe the younger ones eating or trying to eat the older horse's food. Maybe the older horse just wants some space. Maybe the younger one is following the older one around every where.
the older horse might be jealous that you are spending alot of tiem with the younger horse training it and what not. maybe you shoudl spend some time with the older horse and see what happens... GOOD LUCK!
WELL, DOES THE OLDER HORSE DO THAT TO ALL THE HORSES OR TO JUST THAT ONE?
IF THE OLDER ON DOES NOT DO THAT TO THE OTHERS THAN I THINK THE YOUNGER HORSE HAS DONE STUFF TO THE OLDER ONE WHILE YOU WERE NOT AROUND. IF THAT IS THE CASE THEN YOU SHOULD EXAMEN THE OLDER HORSE VERY CAREFUL FOR ANY INJURIES.
IF IT IS NOT THE YOUNGER HORSE THAN IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE THAT THE OLDER HORSE GETS KINDA GRUMPY. I WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT IF THAT WAS THE CASE BECAUSE I HAVE A 17YR OLD GELDING. HE DOES NOT LIKE TO BE BOTHERED MUCH UNLESS HE IS BEING FED. MY HORSE IS ALSO AN ARABIAN SO HE IS A STEP AHEAD OF ALL THE OTHER HORSES ON THE TRICKS. HE TRYS EVERYTHING TO GET THE RIDING OVER WITH.
HOPE THIS HELPS :)
well alot of the times it is good for the older horse to teach younger horses how to respect them, they do it in the wild!
