I have two 3-yr-old Percheron mares that are 13 months pregnant. is it safe to induce?

both mares were bred early july of last year, we checked breeding dates with the vet. both were bred A.I. this is their first pregnancy. one of the mares is completely ready to foal and has been for about a week, and she's starting to lose weight. i think we should induce labor for both but i've never experienced anything like this, so wasn't sure if anyone has had a similar situation before.

By now, it would be a miracle that the foals would be alive. Were the mares positively identified as being infoal by a vet? If the mares are truely in foal, then you have to worry about septicemia (systemic infection) from the dead foals.
Yup, get them into the vet, have them induced and you may have some hefty medical bills on your hand for post treatment.
Go ahead and induce them. They are over due!
You really need to get in contact with your vet and get something done. It is highly possible that both fillies are carrying deceased foals, and it will cause severe problems for the girls if they are not cared for properly including sepsis and death!
A horse's normal gestation is 11 months - if you are absolutely certain of the breeding dates, then there is a severe problem that they are 8 weeks over due. Good luck with them.
call your vet.
when you induce a mare into labor make sure you have the situation under control before hand(i.e meaning all the needed foaling equipment is there and if you work a job make sure you're going to be home, etc) and if you do induce labor it would be better to have the vet on hand.
Good luck
Were they bred to another percheron or draft horse? Are you sure they weren't bred to a jack? Mares bred to jacks will typically go 1 year before birthing. And because your mares being SO young and their first foals, they would easily go over due. Call your vet, and do not induce these mares without his supervision in case any problems may occur. Good Luck!
Drought, breed of stallion etc, shouldn't make any mare go that far over. I've had them go a few weeks over but not that long. However inducing can cause a whole new set of problems in itself. The only logical conclusion is that the breeding dates are wrong and vets are only human and may have written it down wrong.
mares have the ability to hold on to a foal until she feels it's safe to foal out. so unless your vet feels she is in danger or the foal is in danger you gotta play the waiting game. not unusual for maiden mares to have a long pregnacy. plus they are a little on the young side to have bred them, they are still babies themselves! being a draft and being bred to a warmblood shouldn't pose any problems but mother nature will do what she has too. so just keep an eye on them and good luck.
Great job getting the vet to take a look. He/she would know best. But from experience, especially if the vet says that they are fine, I would say let them birth when they are ready. Let nature take it's course.
I have had mares go long in a drought year. My mare went nearly 12 months this past year. But 13 months seems way to long. Since the vet has been out and said the foals were alive, I would hold off a bit more and see what happens. Then I would consult him again about inducing. Good Luck!
Yea its safe to induce! normally they r pregnant no more than a year! she is over due! i would take her to vet and have them do it all and they will take care of her!
