How old do you think you should be before you vollenteer to work at a stable?

I'm only nine years old and love horses.

I'm sure that some places who are in need of volunteers--like rescues-- would LOVE to have you come and help out-- they are usually in over their head a lot and are swamped. I'm sure you could do some work like muck stalls and maybe groom =) Generally you have to be 13+ to actually work at a stable (like stables that offer lessons and have boarders there) to recieve a free lesson in exchange. Legally, in most states you have to be 16+ to recieve monetary pay.
Personally, I think you should be at least thirteen if not older.
At your age, you could help keep the barn clean by sweeping, and you could help clean tack, and you could help groom some of the ponies and smaller horses. You could also be a go -fer if someone needed something.
You would need permission from your mother and the stable owner to do that.
hi, im 18 and i used to volunteer at a stable it was amazing! there were about 6 other girls who used to volunteer the youngest being about 7 years old. If you are responsible enough i dont think it would be a problem at all if you started volunteering now, its a GREAT time you'll love it
If your parents are willing to drive you to and from the barn on a regular basis, and you are a responsible hard worker, then there isn't any reason why you couldn't start working at a stable doing things like cleaning stalls in a couple years. If your parents are willing to work with you then you could volenteer at a horse rescue, usually with younger kids they don't let you alone with the horses, but with your parents there you may be able to help groom horses, and do other things like that.
You should start takeing some lessons, and ask your instructor if they need help brushing horses and things like that, you wont get paid but it will be fun and you will get to be around horses. 9 is kind of young to really be doing regular work for a stable, but you should ask around anyway if you are serious about it. You may need to wait a couple years though. With your age a lot of barns may not want you helping out too much because you would have to be constantly supervised, even if you are good around horses it is still not a good idea to have a 9 year old around horses unsupervised, most farms wont want you alone in their barn, if you get hurt they would be held responsible and could get sued.
Deffinitly try and get your parents involved, if they will volenteer or work with you, you will have more luck.
I think maturity level is the key. You have to be responsible.
i think you probably need to be @ least 12 or 13, but a lot of it also depends on maturity and responsibility and your experience or time around horses and the stable. =)
i think about 12 is the right age. You need to be responsible and mature around horses. They are large animals and need to be handled wisely.
as long as your old enough to have responsibility then any age your responsible
Really, it depends on the barn. Due to liability issues, they might not like it until you're 15 or even older! You'd have to check with the individual barn to see what their policy is.
Even at your age you can still help clean tack, sweep isles, and other things that don't involve direct contact with a horse, which is where the danger comes in.
Riding horses, one issue. You should at least be ten or older. Volunteering, yet, another issue. If you were handling the horses, but don't have any experience, then I would say wait until your 11 or so. Cleaning stalls, organizing tack rooms, watering, feeding, and sweeping the barn aisles may be a good idea for your age right now. Maybe, even, you could talk to the barn manager, and ask if all of the work that you do there could later pay for lessons when you're older.
It'll pretty much depend on the barn you want to work at. Some, for liability reasons, won't let you work until you are a certain age. I'd ask mom or dad to take me to some barns and then introduce yourself to the owners and ask if they'd let you volunteer there...show them how mature you are and maybe someone will say ok!
Go for it! You never know if a stable owner will like you or not, so why not find out? At your age, you could clean tack, sweep, and maybe even clean out a few stalls. I wouldn't go hurrying into riding them, though, because there is a LOT more to it than you can learn in even a couple months.
I am 13 and I am a volunteer at a stable. It is hard work (but I clean stalls, fill water buckets, and sweep up after myself--you probably wouldn't be doing that). You can call a local stable and ask if you can work for lessons. Don't be pushy. It gives a bad first impression, and be prepared for a "no". Maybe you should volunteer for nothing. People like other people who help out for nothing and are more willing to give them things in return. (I know from experience!) Just take my advice and give it a shot! You never know what the outcome will be!
At the barn where I keep my horse you have to be 15 to be able to be left at the barn by yourself. No one will hire you at the age of 9 for barn help. It is to much of a liability for you to work for someone because you are smaller and not able to handle a horse if the horses is spooked etc.
13 w/ much experience
You should be ok, you may not be able to do some things, but the things you can do will be of help. I am 13, and I started when I was in 4th grade, I just got on they payroll.
Have Fun!
if you are old enough to muck out stalls and fill water troughs i'd give you a job.
I just started working at Churchill downs and I had to be 16 but a stable that is not affiliated I guess I would say 14.
at 12 i was working at the barn for my riding lessons. who cares if your shoveling poop, least your around horses.
At your age you should talk to the staff at your barn and see what they say i am 13 and i just statred to work at the barn. i own my own horse and i go and see her everyday. so a month a go they told me that i could start working there and they would help me pay bord. so i think you should talk to the staff.
i was 15 when i started working at a barn, and i know someone who is around 10 but her dad comes with her
it is so great to love horses i would find a local stable and see if u can help out u just got to be strong
You probably should be at least 16 years old, and then you might have to sign a paper saying you work there at your own risk. Some stables may not let people volunteer because of insurance issues.
