3. Rabies, Horse Flu
1.)If you truly don't know how to return to the walk you probably shouldn't be cantering (or riding!) I actually use my seat for all gait transitions, but if there is an emergency and you need to stop first sit up straight and stretch you leg down and then slowly but steadily use one rein to bend your horse to a stop. It isn't the prettiest halt in the world but it is the safest and the most fair for your horse as well.
2.) Too much anything can cause diarreah. Especially if it is a food the horse isn't used to. There are healthy bacteria the horse needs to digest foods and there may not be enough of a certain type to digest certain foods. If your horse gets mild diarrea give him a tube of ProBios or any probiotics.
3.) The only thing you need to compete in the USA is a negative coggins. Some 4-H shows require proof of rabies shots. It is definitely wise to have your horse fully inoculated though. Your vet can tell you which vaccines are needed in your area.
