How To Get a Horse To Move?

I have a 5 yr Paint Gelding that will not move. He will not trot, it is very hard to get him to walk, last night he was turning in a circle and stopped we had to have 2 people come out into the arena 1w/ a whip and the other came to try to lead him he still would not move. Please help I'll take any ideas !!!!!

Get a pair of spurs and use those.
maybe he is in pain? if not, try carrying a crop, or lounging him.
if he just started have him checked out by a vet if not get rid of him
How did you get him into the arena to start with? I always find food is a good start - you can always wean them off later. Have you tried join-up? My arab x would only lunge one way when I first got him, but he had next to no training and was unbroken so it was probably just inexperience. I don't think chasing them with a whip really works cos you just end up with a scared animal and not a willing one. If he doesnt want to go forwards try backwards - he'll soon get fed up with that and may decide to cooperate. Good luck. Su
Did this just start? Does she seem to favor a leg or is she just lazy? I had a horse that did the exact same thing. She refused to do more than a walk. A day later I found she had an abcessed foot. A couple days later she was almost back to her old self.
If your leading him then you can knock him off his balance by pulling his head to the side instead of straight ahead. When pulling his head to the side pull at the same time. Hope this helps, it works with my horses.
Try whiping the rope again when I do that it works.
One time at a horse show we were at, the people from our ranch were trying to get this one horse to go into the trailer. But he wouldn't move. So it took a crop and 6 people to get him in.
Yo could try getting someone on him and if he has a horse that he likes there then get someone up on her. Then make the person on the girl horse grab the halter. It worked for my friend and her horse because at the show her horse wouldn't go through the gate so her sister had to come with her horse(because they are best friends, the horses.) and she grabbed the halter or lead rope...I don't remember, and her horse just went in.
this one time I was on a horse. and he wouldnt move. he wouldnt even walk! so then his owner had to make him gate over and over again.dont be afraid to kick him as hard as you can.
You can buy a crop...(even if you are western)
his legs or his rump could be sore and he does not want to move
Maybe your horse has a back problem or may have some form of laminitus. You could use treats to try and encourage him to moved forward and when he does move (even a couple of steps) reward him. If he thinks hes going to get hit when he does walk forward he is not going to move and its better to get through this problem yourself instead of getting the help of lots of other people as this may scare your horse.
have a vet come and check him out for and saddle sores or stiffness or pain in his legs or back. check all the tack through from nose to tail. bit bridle saddle girth saddle pad the whole to do. check his hooves for any tenderness. check his responses in his eyes to see if he has any eye problems.
if the vet passes him do soem lunging with him and see how that fairs. if he does fine there then it could have somethign to dow tih your seat (dont get mad at me it happened to me once a horse refused to move until i was sitting right) or it could be he has a hard mouth or hard sides. try getting down and leading him around. use a crop, lightly if need be. get him to walk with you. talk to him alittle. ask him nicely and offer him a treat. you want him to work with you not against you so leave the crop as a last resort. even if it's just a few steps he takes reward him with lots of praise and ask him to do it again. whatver you do dont give up and put him back in his stall he sees that as if he keeps doing that then he wins. if he just wont do it try round penning.
If he's just being stubborn it's time to get angry and show him you're the boss.
Use a crop on him, keep slapping his behind and giving him kicks until he gets the message. Let a few shouts at him to move. It's the only way really, if you just be nice about it he'll walk all over you.
How can you not get a horse to move forward especially with a whip? If what you are saying is true then you need to consult your vet cause I would say he is tying up!
