I am starting horse riding lessons next week but I do not know what to wear on my legs.?

I am considering wearing shorts because its the summer but I do not know if it will hurt if I wear shorts. I was told to wear jeans but the only type of jeans I have are Levis 501's and I wear my jeans kinda tight plus the denim on them are now quite soft because they are well worn. Should I go with shorts or Levis or just wear trackie bottoms?
Answers:
Wear track pants for now, until you know you are serious about horse riding and can invest in some johdpurs. Shorts are a no no!! Wear jeans if they are soft and will not chafe your legs.
Short?? No way!! The stirrup leathers will pinch your legs!!
Get some jodhs. Or go with the trackie bottoms for now.
Jodpurs are the best for men or women, they are stretchy, padded on the instep and dont rub. Anything is ok, but if you dont want to wear jodpurs, I would suggest jeans.
Wear trackie bottoms.never wear shorts
stick with trackie bottoms for now not worth spending money on proper gear until you're sure you're going to stick at riding
You do not want to wear shorts. Trust me, at least not until you've got some leather on your hide. Wear jeans or other long pants and a long sleeved shirt. The long stuff can get a bit warm at midday but you'll be thankful for the sleeves when your skin doesn't start peeling off from sunburn.
Dont wear shorts! Your poor legs will be rubbed raw! Go with trackie bottoms and look at what everyone else wears. Some people do wear jeans but I've always found the inner leg seam uncomfortable. If you really get into horse-riding consider jodpurs, but wait until you're sure you want to continue. Good luck and enjoy!
Jods are expensive so although they are the best tool for the job, I wouldn't invest in them for your first lesson. Jeans are fine and trackie bums are too - shorts are defnitely a bad idea. As someone else said, the stirrup leathers will pinch your skin and also your legs will rub. Good luck and I hope you enjoy riding!!
WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T WEAR SHORTS OR 3%26#92;4 PANTS!!
they will hurt your legs if they rub on the saddle.imagine blisters and red legs.
jeans are good even if they are worn.
trackies are ok as well but are still not as good as jeans cause of the thin fabric.
wear your jeans and if the skinny jeans its even better cause they will grip and are the most like jodphurs.
hope it helps.

wonder
defentually not shorts they will pinch and really hurt, you can get special jodpurs for horse riding which you can get from any saddery and arn't expensive, for the summer you can get thinner ones so you dont get to hot, you have to wera the right clothers for riding otherwise you will find your self hurting, have you got a riding hat aswell and jodpur boots or long ones, or wellies will do fine for now, for your first lesson you will get away with trackies and wellies but ask your instructor what sort of clothers you should get, good luck.
Def track bottoms. Jeans are too restricting and shorts are down right dangerous, they will offer no protection from the pinching of the stirrup leathers or brambles if you are going to be riding down country lanes.
Good luck, have fun. Just get some jods when you are sure you want to continue riding. Give it at least a month before you splash out on any proper riding gear, but, of course you should buy the best helmet you can afford right from the start. Don't be tempted to borrow one from the school. Get your own and then you know it has been fitted correctly and has had no knocks or bumps.
A helmet may look in good condition but if it has had a knock or even if it has been dropped on the floor a couple of times the inner shell can be pushed up against the outer casing leaving it with no "buffer" zone if you came off and hit your head.
You will be better off wearing trackkie bottoms or if you can borrow a pair, slightly less tight fitting jeans.
Shorts are a NO NO, you will be surprised the bruises you can pick up from the stirrup leathers, your legs are also at more risk from horse flies and nettle stings etc if you wear shorts.
If you are going to stick at riding a good pair of jodhpurs will be a must,
Do not wear shorts, your legs will be red raw, same with jeans. If you can't get any jodphurs then wear tracksuit bottoms, the only problem is that they will ride up your legs so tuck them into your socks. Also, for footwear, you must wear small sturdy with a small solid heel and light ankle support, not trainers or wellies. And make sure you have your own hat for reasons stated in previous answers. Have a look on ebay for cheap riding gear (except hats!), but, to be honest, the riding school should have told you all this when you booked your lessons!
umm i would recommend some type of riding pants (made for riding horses?) they will make you more comfortable on the saddle. if you wear shorts your sweaty legs will stick to the saddle and it wont be comfortable.
I wear shorts IF i wear short chaps with them you have to be careful with your ankles else they scrape on the saddle.also jeans are good buy a cheap pair from your local asda/tesco or get some jodphurs. Trackie bottoms should be fine also depends what footwear you will be wearing and if it will supports your ankles
Don't wear shorts. If you fall off then you could seriously damage your legs. You must wear a pair of trckie bottoms and a pair of wellies or riding boots for ultimate protection. You will be hot, but you will have the adeuquate protection. Have a great time riding - its the best
xx
it's probably not a good idea to wear shorts, cos if you're out on a hack (or just out of the arena) then you might get bitten, or if you fall off you could really hurt yourself. That's not to say wearing jodphurs will stop it hurting if you fall, but it will help! i suppose it really depends on what type of riding you're doing. If you're doing english, then your best bet is to wear jodpurs, but if you're doing western, well, jeans i suppose! if you were told to wear jeans, then you'd better wear jeans! why not borrow some old jeans off someone? or wear your Levis and keep them for riding and buy a new pair for everyday wear! it's up to you! =D have fun riding!! =D
what ever u feel comfortable in.jodpurs are your best bet tho u may look stupid in them. they r a bit like leggings.! dont were jeans
I ride for a living and always wear skinny jeans or jods. Tracksuit bottoms will ride up your legs and you will get pinched by the stirrup leathers, shorts are ok if you have half chaps or long leather riding boots, but I wouldnt recommend them for a novice as your skin will be tender.
I would go with the jeans as you don't want to ride with bare legs and a leather saddle. OUCH!! You will want a tighter fit of jeans because looser material will chafe your legs more. It doesn't matter what brand of jeans you wear. A lot of riders wear Wranglers or Cruel, but the horse doesn't care what kind of brand they are. Just make sure you wear something that fits you well and that you are comfortable in.
Not shorts!! I did that thinking that it would be more cooler.instead of coolness I got pain...i wore rubber boots that pinched my legs and bad chaffing. anyways...your levi's are the best bet they will protect you from chafffing as for the heat...well wear a tank top, what type of riding are you doing? english or western? if your're riding english, you can purchase breeches or jodpurs with a tall field /riding boot wich are a long stretchy pant..but i suggest that you go to your lesson before you buy the breeches and or jods just beacuse they can be pricy and you have to be commited. Have fun at your lesson!
-live, laugh, ride OFTEN!:P
well should not wear shorts because you will end up with bruiss the best choice is jean or by a special pair
Never wear shorts the leather of the saddle will rub against your legs.Buy jodphurs.
wear jodphurs or any kind of pants!!!
Don't wear shorts! Your legs will rub on the leather and burn (like rug burn). Jeans create the best friction and help to keep you stuck in the saddle (for lask of a better term.) Just wear your jeans, or purchase a cheap pair that you will use for riding lessons to come, as you need to be flexible in the saddle. Good luck, hope this helps. =)
ok I just started horseback riding lessons, i really wanted to wear shorts too, but the thing was that my mom said that you cannot wear shorts!!! so ONLY wear pants! dont wear capris either, shorts or capris, or anything that isnt pants dont wear them, because you will get saddleburn.
Definitely the jeans, the shorts may be cooler, but way more uncomfortable when riding, you would probably get saddle burn or something like that.
No shorts. The stirrup leathers will hurt your legs.
It'll hurt if you wear shorts, wear jeans.
go to a local tack shop and get riding pants, and paddock boots, half chaps, then you should be all ready for your lesson so have fun!!! =]
