The best thing you can do is to walk him around the grounds instead of just sticking him in a pasture. Hand graze him and get him used to the area =) Lots of treats and grooming can help make his new experience better. Time is what it takes.
Take him for a walk around the property so he can get used to whats around him.
well, owning three horses myself, it is best to lead him around his pen and let him get used to you. and little by little he will grow to like you. as long as you show him love and care you and his new environment will grow on him
lounge him in a bull pen.
give him a routen when you let him out in the ring/paster whatever you have before you ride him. lounge him with the tack on or lounge him in the bll pen.
also cut back on his grain intake
First check what you are feeding, cut back on anything that is heating such as oats and add more bulk such as chaff, bran. I have worked with World and European champion quarter horses all my life and I would suggest saddling him and giving him a good lunge for about 30 minutes before riding him. You should also assess if he is actually nervous and worried of the surroundings or just having a laugh with you because that would significantly alter how you deal with the problem. It's usual for them to be wound up when first moved but that should pass within a couple of days. If you have a round pen, put him out in there so he can check out what's happening but if he looks like he's going to be crazy and tear the place up, give him some ace or rompun first.
Let him sniff things if he wants to, he will get used to things eventually. Don't let him out into a field with horses he doesn't know, buddy him up with an older horse, or a friendly horse. Ask someone around the barn for help if you are unsure about anything. Walk him around the perimeter put his nose on things. Spend a lot of time with him, so he knows you care. Just don't get too frustrated, lounging him can help before you ride, or just lounging him in general. When you go to ride you should do transitions, walk to trot to walk to halt. It will slow him down if he is stronger or faster than usual. Good luck!!
Lounge him for at least 30 min get his energy drained so he isn't so worried about whats happening around him
Once he trusts you and you stay calm, he should stay calm. The more time you can spend with him and the more activities you can do with him, the more accepting he will be of new environments. Good luck! And have lots of patience!
Speak to him, let him know you want to love him, not hurt him. Become his best friend, but don't let him take advantage of you. lol
btw: sounds like a gorgeous horse, let me know how it works out
